Routine Obstetrics

I'm Pregnant...Now What?

Your prenatal care begins with a discussion of your individual needs, desires and expectations of the pregnancy and delivery. Our providers will work closely with expectant mothers to give you comfort, compassion and confidence when you need it most. For the convenience of our patients, ultrasound and lab work can typically be done in our offices.

Together, we will design a personalized birth plan, exploring your birthing options, caregivers and the environment in which you choose to give birth. From your first contraction to your baby’s first cry, our expert, caring team will be there every step of the way. View All Pregnancy Resources

High-Risk Obstetrics

Women considered to have a high-risk pregnancy - due to age, diabetes, multiple pregnancy or other health factors - can still receive the highest level of care close to home. A maternal-fetal medicine specialist (a physician who specializes in the care of high-risk pregnant women) from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center visits with high-risk patients and performs ultrasounds regularly at our Newburyport office as part of BIDMC’s growing clinical affiliation with Anna Jaques Hospital.

Some conditions that may cause a pregnancy to be considered high-risk include:

  • Age (under 17 or over 35)
  • Diabetes
  • Fetal problems
  • High blood pressure
  • Multiple births
  • Overweight or underweight
  • Placenta previa
  • Preeclampsia
  • Premature labor before the 37th week of pregnancy
  • Problems with previous pregnancies
  • Thyroid disease

Midwifery

Our team of certified nurse midwives provides independent care for low-risk women during pregnancy, birth, and post-partum, guided by a philosophy that for most women, pregnancy and birth are normal, healthy events. Our nurse midwives create a caring environment and establish a connection with a woman and her family to provide individualized care that minimizes unnecessary interventions while offering the same tests, medications and procedures as their physician counterparts. They also provide gynecologic care and family planning, and consult with our board certified OB/GYN physicians and other specialists as needed. Meet our team of midwives.

VBAC Deliveries

Vaginal birth after Cesarean (VBAC) is an option for delivery at the Birth Center at Anna Jaques Hospital. Some women who have undergone a Cesarean delivery may be a candidate for a VBAC, and should discuss this option with their obstetric providers. Many women have successful vaginal births after having a prior Cesarean delivery. Our utmost hope is to provide the care and support to make every subsequent birth experience a special one.

Anna Jaques Hospital Birth Center and Neonatal Care Center

The Anna Jaques Birth Center is one of the Greater Newburyport and Merrimack Valley’s greatest assets. From the moment you arrive at the Birth Center, you will become a part of a long tradition of distinguished prenatal, maternal and postpartum health care. That quality is measurable: the Birth Center consistently scores above the 90th percentile for patient satisfaction in Press-Ganey surveys.

Many community hospitals can’t offer the level of comfort and expertise available at our Birth Center:

  • Anesthesiologist physically on site 24/7 to control pain and for emergency C-section deliveries
  • Special care for newborns at our Neonatal Care Center with a neonatologist available 24/7
  • Overnight accommodations for your partner
  • Room service
  • A variety of classes and support groups, including childbirth preparation, parenting, sibling preparation, breastfeeding and much more.

During the extraordinary experience of giving birth, we provide a family-centered nurturing environment and expert care through our in-house physicians and anesthesiologists.
